California Climate Policies Bringing Over $13 Billion to San Joaquin Valley

5a1a7597While climate programs are under political attack in California and nationally, we find that these programs have a total economic benefit of more than $13 billion on the San Joaquin Valley including the creation of over 30,000 jobs.

This just-released report, The Economic Impacts of the California’s Major Climate Programs on the San Joaquin Valley, examines the impact of cap-and-trade, renewable energy, and energy efficiency programs in the Valley.

Two Research Fellows Join CLEE5a1a7597

John Bowie is a graduate of Pace Law School. His recent work includes an analysis of energy efficiency programs and case studies of innovative finance in renewable energy. He joined the Wheeler Institute in November and is focusing on translating policy lessons from the energy sector to California water.

Alida Cantor received her PhD in Geography from Clark University in 2016. Her dissertation focused on the discourses, politics, and laws used to justify controversial rural-to-urban water transfers in California. Alida will be joining the Wheeler Institute in January.

 


Holly Doremus Named AAAS Fellowdoniger_thumb

Professor and CLEE Faculty Co-Director Holly Doremus was just named a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science. The honor hails her contributions to innovation, education and scientific leadership, “particularly involving the complex interactions among natural science, social science and policy.”

 


 

Climate Policy Solutions Website Launch Webinarclimatepolicysolutions_thumb

On Nov 9 CLEE held a webinar to celebrate the launch of www.climatepoloicysolutions.org which contains all the policy recommendations emanating from our Climate Change & Business Research Initiative. Since 2009, this collaborative initiative with UCLA has been examining ways to reduce carbon emissions in multiple sectors of the economy. These policy recommendations result from a series of workshop convenings with key stakeholders from the business, academic, and policy sectors of the affected industries. They are also contained in reports accessible via CLEE or the UCLA Emmett Institute.

Next Steps for U.S. Climate Policy with David Donigerdoniger_thumb

On the cusp of national elections and international meetings on climate change, CLEE hosted David Doniger, Director of the Climate and Clean Air Program at the NRDC. David’s Nov 1 address provided an in-depth look at the future of the Clean Power Plan in the context of other key efforts to reduce emissions and increase resilience.

Ken Kimmell, President of the Union of Concerned Scientists, spoke on Oct 19 addressing the current international framework on climate change and the ambition gap that exists between pledges and action. The lunch talk covered the potential tfor novel state approaches technological opportunities to facilitate emission reductions.
