Tree species mixing can increase maximum stand density
Hans Pretzsch and Peter Biber
Recent interest has been expressed in the value accruing to forests from greater tree species diversity. For example, do mixed-species stands store more carbon than single-species stands? Several studies have demonstrated that stand productivity can be higher in mixed-species forests than in monospecific stands. This study utilized a large suite of trials from across Europe to demonstrate that species mixing also increases the carrying capacity of a site as represented by the stand density index. The increase averaged 16.5% across a variety of species pairs and was significant for pairs of species with complementary traits (e.g., early and late successional) but not for more similar species. The results indicate that the supply, capture, and use efficiency of resources (light, water, nutrients) are higher for species mixtures than for monocultures. Silvicultural guidelines for mixed-species stands should be adjusted from those derived based on stand density observations in monospecific stands. »Read more...
Just-IN
Just-IN manuscripts are pdf versions of authors’ accepted manuscripts prior to copy editing and page composition. Although considered published, Just-IN manuscripts are not the official version of record and can be substantially different from the final version. Note also that the translation of the abstract will be posted only with the official version of record. For more information, visit our FAQ page on Just-IN manuscripts.
e-First Articles
e-First articles have undergone copy editing, page composition, and correction by the author but have not yet been assigned to an issue. They represent the version of record and are citable. Only in exceptional cases will corrections be made to e-First articles and only before they are paginated and included in an issue.
