COSIMA DATA ARCHIVE 1.0
=======================
1. Introduction
---------------
This PDS dataset contains COSIMA data from the ground calibration
phase from 2002-05-29 up to the end of the prelanding phase 2014-11-20.
COSIMA instrument has 72 different dust collecting substrates, in
groups of 3 in 24 target holders. To understand the dust grain
spectrum, one has to know the substrate background spectrum. For
this reason, the operational history of each substrate is given.
The history contains information about substrate storage and expose
periods, cleaning and heating actions, COSISCOPE camera images and
grains lists and any spectra taken. The history product contains
history from the moment substrates were installed in the COSIMA
flight instrument.
The user of the database is suggested to start from the 72 substrate
history products instead of the INDEX.TAB normally used in the PDS
datasets.
COSISCOPE camera can take 1024*1024 pixel images with 10 bit
brightness information. Instead of sending full images, part of the
image can be masked. In addition, COSISCOPE can detect prominent
grains collected on the substrate during the expose. These grain
lists contain size, position and brightness information.
COSIMA uses Indium ion beam to extract secondary ions from the dust
grains. The time of flight mass spectrometer can detect ion events in
131072 time bins, each 1.953125 ns in length. The spectrum can be
divided to 3 subspectrums to reduce the telemetry. In addition, the
mass scale can be established on board COSIMA and only the peaks of
the first 300 organic and inorganic masses can be sent.
The COSIMA data in this archive has been provided by Finnish
Meteorological Institute. The instrument Primary Investigator is Dr
Martin Hilchenbach, Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research.
2. Volume format
----------------
3. File formats
---------------
Data product files in this data archive are in ASCII format, except
COSISCOPE images, which are binary. Data products are TABLEs and
FITS-images.
Documentation files are provided always in ASCII and possibly as PDF
files.
COSIMA data products use attached labels. The labels point to
external format containers (*.FMT files), saved in the LABEL
subdirectory of this archive.
Data structure is described in the COSIMA SIS document,
COSIMASIS.ASC, that can be found in the DOCUMENT subdirectory
