Planetary Science Tools

PDS Tool Registry at the Engineering Node

The PDS Engineering Node maintains a registry of tools useful for planetary science. Users can download tools from the registry. Users can also submit software to the registry that they feel is of interest to others working with planetary science data.

Other Tools

The following is a list compiled by the Geosciences Node of useful planetary science tools and links for the PDS data user.  The list contains both products produced by the PDS and those produced externally.

Geosciences Node Resources Other PDS Resources External Resources

Virtual Astronaut is an interactive 3D environment that allows the user to explore and view the Martian landscape as an astronaut working with a rover, using data from orbital and landed missions.
LRO LEND Data Viewer is a tool for reading LEND data products, with the ability to graph data fields and download data in CSV files.
MRO SHARAD reader is a set of IDL scripts that generate the JPEG images in the SHARAD browse directories. They may be a useful model for reading the SHARAD data.
Odyssey GRS Data Node provides custom-generated GRS data products tailored to the user's latitude/longitude and time range specifications.
TES Data Node is a search tool for the MGS TES Data Archive.  Constrain search by position, orbit number, scan length, time of day, atmospheric conditions, and observation type.
ASU THEMIS Maps provides maps of all THEMIS, CTX, HiRISE, MOC and Viking orbital images. Query and download data products from the map-based search.
Lunar Orbiter Digitized Film Archive is an archive of digitized Lunar Orbiter data including near-global coverage of the Moon, as well as several high resolution frames covering Apollo-related sites.
PDS Data Set Search is a tool for searching PDS data.  Find by mission, target, target type, instrument, or instrument type.
Planetary Image Atlas is a searchable index of PDS image data. Find and retrieve image products from planetary missions.
THEMIS Data Distribution Website is a source for all publicly released THEMIS data.  Search and filter by image ID, latitude and longitude, or orbit number.
Apollo Image Archive is a map-based search interface for digital scans of Apollo flight film restored by the ASU Space Exploration Resources.
ASU Spectral Library provides an interface for search, view, and download of an extensive library of mineral, rock, and soil infrared spectra.
ASU THEMIS Global Data Sets is a set of maps of THEMIS, MOLA, TES, MOC, Viking IRTM, and MAG/ER Mars Global Data sets. Download data or view on an interactive map.
ESA Data Access access to the European Space Agency planetary data archives.
Google Earth  is a map based interface for exploring Earth and Mars. Version 5.0 includes MER data and links to the Analyst's Notebook. Learn more about using Google Earth to find MER data.
HiRISE Extended Search allows users to perform  HiRISE image searches based on keyword, latitude and longitude, or science theme.
HRSC Global Image Mosaics of Mars is an online tool for overlaying Mars Express HRSC and OMEGA data on a global map of Mars. See HRSC Data Dissemination – Dynamic Queries and Data Interoperability, Walter, S.H.G., and S. van Gasselt, LPSC XLV #1088, 2014
Interactive CRISM Map
is a map based interface for searching CRISM data products.  Individual data products can be selected for download.
Kaguya (Selene) Data Archive
has data from the Japanese lunar mission Kaguya (also called Selene).
Kaguya DEM Data - How To Obtain has instructions for downloading Kaguya DEM data.
LMMP - Lunar Mapping and Modeling Portal is a web portal that allows users to search, view and download a number of the mapped lunar data products from past and current missions, along with visualization and analysis tools.
LPI Lunar and Planetary Science and Exploration Website contains mission summaries, documents, images, science experiment information and surface data products for lunar missions.
Martian Meteorite Compendium is an online catalog of information about Martian meteorites maintained at Johnson Space Center.
MESSENGER Quickmap is a map based tool for viewing and downloading data from MESSENGER observations of Mercury
NSSDC Master Catalog is a search tool for the National Space Sciences Data Center.  Filter by spacecraft, experiment, data collection, publication, lunar and planetary map, or new and updated data.
Malin Space Science Systems MOC Image Gallery is a gallery of MOC images and their context produced by Malin Space Science Systems.
Mars Global Digital Dune Database is a database of moderate to large dune fields on Mars inferred from THEMIS IR data.
Mars HiRISE Hi-Resolution Topography provides High-Resolution DEMs of selected areas of interest on Mars.
Martian Meteorites is a resource for Martian meteorite information with an up to date list of confirmed samples.
NASA/USGS Planetary Geologic Mapping Program is a search tool for planetary geologic maps and a resource for mapping guidelines from the Astrogeology Science Center.
Planetary Science Archive Global Maps of Mars provides quick access to all global Mars maps that have been published in the PSA.
Software and Online Processing
NASAView is a free downloadable application that allows users to display Planetary Data System archive products.
SPICE Toolkit Software allows users to access SPICE kernel files.  The principal element of the Toolkit is a subroutine library, which the customer integrates into his/her application to read SPICE kernels and compute derived quantities.
ASU THEMIS Processing Web Interface simplifies THEMIS data processing by allowing it to occur remotely at ASU.
CRISM Analysis Toolkit (CAT) is a collection of ENVI and IDL procedures for reading, displaying, and analyzing MRO CRISM data, produced by the CRISM Science  Team.
