Mariner 9 was the first spacecraft to orbit another planet. Launched on 30 May 30 1971, Mariner 9 reached Mars less than six months later on 13 November. It studied the atmosphere, mapped over map 85% of the Martian surface at a resolution of 1 to 2 km, and looked for heat sources in search of evidence of volcanic activity. The spacecraft also obtained the first closeup pictures of Phobos and Deimos. Mariner 9 completed its final transmission on 27 October 27 1972.
